It is difficult for most small children such as babies and toddlers to sleep for longer than eight hours without needing to use the bathroom. This explains why they might frequently wet their sheets throughout the night when their parents are trying to potty train them. Studies have confirmed that there are many children who will even wet their beds as teenagers due to their undeveloped bladders. It may seem impossible to clean this type of mess, but there are several key steps which can be followed to do so.
The first step which you need to complete is to soak up as much of the urine from the soiled mattress as possible. This can be accomplished by simply using several dry towels. To start lay the first towel directly on top of the soiled spot. Use your hands to firmly press the towel down into the mattress to try and soak up a substantial amount of urine at once. Do not even start this process without first wearing protective accessories such as gloves to complete this step.
At this point you should at least have one towel which is completely soaked in urine. Make sure that you do not just leave these towels hanging around your house, because the awful smell of the urine can quickly spread throughout your home. Therefore, the next step is to wash these towels thoroughly with hot water and laundry soap. You can either wash them by hand or within a washing machine before giving them plenty of time to dry.
The next step is to apply vinegar to the urine spot as well. This might not seem to make very much sense, especially since the vinegar might actually smell stronger than the urine. However, studies have confirmed that using vinegar will disinfect your mattress properly and completely eliminate the awful smell of urine. Allow the vinegar to sit for at least ten minutes before removing it. After doing so, pour small amounts of baking soda over any urine which remains and leave it there for at least 12 hours before sucking up the remains with a vacuum cleaner.
Allow the soiled mattress to stand outside in the sun for several hours so that it can air out and dry over time. Before putting the mattress back on the bed check if you managed to remove the urine smell completely from the mattress. If you followed the above instructions carefully, the mattress should be as good as new. Flip the mattress to the opposite side before putting it back on your child's bed.
